When I first revisited the school (2009, I think), I had two thoughts: "What a great idea!" and "How daunting!" Well, it's really come a long way in a few short years. What you've created here at The Teacherage is quite remarkable, and our stay has been great! Thank you all for your warm hospitality and this wonderful gift to the community and us alumni.
I went to school here in 72-75 approximately 4th, 5th, 6th grade... I thought the stay here was great! Lottsa memories!!! Was also a nice, clean, quiet place to be. Sure am glad they're saving this old historic building. It was great to be here!
Wow! Just wow. Very impressive. I've never stayed in a cleaner, more comfortable place! The work you've put into this building is amazing. We loved everything about it -- from the woodwork to the squeeky floors to the little touches -- especially the fresh flowers in every room! We'll be following your progress and we'll spread the word. Good luck and thanks for everything!
Great Place, I recommend the Minnesota Trivia Book!
Thank you so much for being a home away from home for our family at a time we buried an alum from this school in the Alango Cemetery. We appreciated the caring touches and beauty tucked into the historic decor. We can tell a lot of love has gone into this place. Thanks, Roni, for the fabulous school tour!
Love this place.
What a GEM the Alango School is! My mother grew up in this neighborhood, so this is home. The school is a treasure for all to enjoy! Mom receives the Cook Herald, so we found out about this unique place to stay. I am a retired teacher, having taught 34 years, but have never stayed overnight -- just some very long days in a school setting. The Teacherage reminds us of "Grandma's house", a great memory. My brother rents property in NY, FL (South Beach), and Rio and he appreciated all the excellent detail in this renovated school. Thank you SO much!
The Teacherage at Alango provides a marvelous base camp from which to explore the Iron Range, BWCA, Superior National Forest, George Washington State Forest, and other area attractions. The Teacherage has been lovingly restored, with room for multiple friends and/or family. The kitchen is perfectly acceptable for vacation cooking, and groceries can be had a few miles north in Cook or a little further away in Virginia. The windows across the front let in ample sun, while the interior remains comfortably cool. Satellite TV and a DVD player provide evening entertainment at home, for those less inclined to read or play games (a healthy variety available on site). And the price is right! This was a very pleasant surprise for me; I'll be back!
Owner Response: I love it when guests are "pleasantly surprised" by The Teacherage at Alango! Thank you for your review! The Teacherage at Alango is a wonderful gem just waiting to be discovered!
A+++!!! I can't say enough positive things about The Teacherage at Alango. This was the best place we have stayed for a vacation rental EVER. It was fun being out in the woods and waking up to beautiful views of deer and wildlife outside the window. The rental was SPACIOUS, very clean, comfortable and the decor was quaint vintage with so many homey touches. The teacherage has a wonderful Bed and Breakfast feel, but with all the privacy you want. In addition to the historic beauty, I was impressed by how well equipped the rental was. We had all the appliances, cookware, dishware and accessories necessary to cook our own meals (which we prefer to do, even on vacation lol) and the bathroom was well stocked with plentiful towels and essentials like shampoo, soap, bath salts, lotion and even qtps! There was even a full size washer and dryer which was a great amenity as well. We will be staying here again next time we are in the area and will recommend to any frirends.
The Teacherage is spacious, beautiful and relevant. We completely enjoyed our stay. We could feel the history of the space and the Maki's have done an incredible job in their restoration efforts of this part of their history. It is a great space for a couple, a family or a group of friends who appreciate privacy in addition to the clean and comfortable shared living areas and kitchen. A must experience. This region is full of fun and interesting things to do and the beauty of this northern most MN land is a treat for old or young.
What a treat to stay at the school where my husbands father graduated in 1938. It was fun to stay in comfortable home away from home with personality and old fashion charm as well modern amenities like WIFI and cable. Much better than a run of the mill hotel. We were greeted by Ronnie and given a tour of the school . While there are still many projects to be done there you could tell how important it was to her an her family to restore this wonderful landmark. The unit was more than enough for my husband and myself and we were pleasantly surprised to find bottled water, spices and a bottle of wine to enjoy. It is an older building and if someone is sensitive to smells it might be a problem but it was not an issue for us. We took a walk down the road every evening and saw more deer than you can count on your hands. There is not a grocery store near by so I would suggest you stop in Virginia to get what you need. Bath soap and shampoo as well as kitchen essentials were supplied. We would definitely stay here again and have recommended it to others.
Owner Response: Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement during your stay at The Teacherage. It's a pleasure to share this beautiful, historic school with people who are looking for unique lodging. Thank you again for being part of the Alango School experience! I look forward to having you back for your next vacation!
The title tells it all. The owner is on-site and offers tours of the historic building. It's worth an hour of your time for the tour. There is plenty of room for your dog to run around and this rental is far more reasonably priced than others that allow pets. You are about an hour from Ely, which is a major center of activity. I'd recommend the property based on the friendly owner, the cleanliness, the historic nature of the building, and the quiet location. I also suggest watching "the Shining" while you're there.
Owner Response: We're so happy we are able to provide peaceful, spacious, and clean lodging for travelers and their four-legged companions! Thank you for supporting our ongoing efforts of keeping our school "alive"!
My stay at the Teacherage was one of the most peaceful, relaxing vacations ever. From Ron and Corinne?s warm welcome to visiting with local residents at the Saturday Farmer?s Market I felt very much at home. The best part though was touring the school with Ron and Corrine as my guide. Seeing the results of the careful restoration efforts was like taking a step back in time; I found myself not wanting to leave. While the area has much to offer, I preferred the peaceful ness at the school: browsing in the well-stocked library, relaxing in the beautiful surroundings of the well decorated home and appreciating the dedication that it has taken to preserve this wonderful place.
The three nights were really nice, anyone going up there especially from the Madison area should plan on at least three days. It was nice and quiet, and a plus to learn that satellite TV was available for viewing especially the movie channels, my parents and I watched a few movies when we got back at the end of the day. (I would add though a DVD player, I had brought with me some DVD’s thinking we could watch them. The bedrooms were very nice, and both were very roomy and comfortable. My mom especially liked her room! The only think that maybe you want to add in the future is televisions in those rooms. You could get away with just satellite service in those rooms and not worry about movie channels. The living room area was nice, I liked the choice of chairs and also the ceiling fan. The breeze coming through the windows was an added plus, and as your brochure stated, it was nice listening to the rain drops with the windows open. We did not get to spend time in the library, (though it was offered), if and when I go up there again, I will be sure to spend time there. That was a nice setup! I would have liked to have seen the rest of the building, but I forgot to ask. So can’t give any feedback on that. The kitchen was quaint, and well stocked with cooking equipment, when I first got there and found out there was no stove, I told myself, how are we going to cook for ourselves? But then as I was looking around, found all the equipment to cook just about anything and did use 3 different pieces. We made out without any problems, we only ate out once and that was at the Casino nearby. One of my parents favorite places to go. A BIG plus, that it was a scenic drive to get there, and I was surprised at how nice the casino actually was and very well maintained. One other day, we headed out south and visited Virginia and took in a movie in the afternoon. That maybe another thing you could add to the list of things to do in the area. It was a nice drive there, and downtown Virginia is worth driving around. One other thing that I would add to things to do is golfing, I was not aware that there was a golf course only about 5 miles away, I would have brought golf clubs with me and golf both the days I was there. There were other golf courses also advertised as we were driving around. I should have done my homework and looked around the area on the internet, bad me. I know there are many lakes, not much of a fan of fishing myself, but might be useful to give some information on locations nearby that rent boats. I think I could have convinced my mom to have gone on a boat ride J Overall we enjoyed the stay and certainly would recommend going back. Dan thanks again!!
